The Dream (Preen) Dress

Preen by Thornton Bregazzi dress | £890.00
Warehouse earrings | £9.99
ASOS sandals | £25.00

This dress literally is ‘the dream’. I got to wear it for a shoot recently, and I fell head over heels in love. Silk-blend devoré printed with white pentacle motifs, their signature asymmetric hem, and don’t even get me started on the lace trimmed organza sleeves!! I was smitten. Granted, it’s not cheap – there’s no getting away from that. But I have splurged on special dresses in the past, and have had them for years and years, and never regretted buying them for a second. Remember the Chloé horse print chiffon dress (Stella’s last collection for them)? Loved it, bought it, then saw Carrie wearing it on Sex & The City – loved it a little bit more, and it’s still going strong now. I bought it to wear to my friends’ wedding – they just celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary. I have a Stella McCartney floral print bias-cut floor sweeping dress (a little less of a sweeper than it was, due to a fellow fashion editor stepping on it at the Milan shows once, ripping it, resulting in me having to have it taken up. Oh well, shit happens), but the story is the same – bought it around nine years ago, have worn it to countless weddings, parties etc etc. And I now wear it with a grey sweatshirt chucked over and hi-tops. I fact, you’ve probably seen me wearing it on Instagram. Anyway, my point is, if you choose wisely, that ‘wow’ or ‘dream’ dress might make an initial substantial dent in your bank balance, but if you love it enough and take due care of it, it will love you right back in the old ‘cost per wear’ calculations (every shopaholics favourite justification). So I am seriously considering saving up for this dress, as I felt great wearing it, it’s totally gorgeous and I know I would wear it again and again and again…
I have also found some non-Preen dresses that all emulate a little bit of that ‘Preen magic’ I’m always seduced by. Just add a ‘barely there’ high sandal.
